Turbo Yeast Guide

Still Spirits make a range of Turbo yeasts to suit you needs and brewing conditions. Choose the yeast that best suits the way you like to brew.

General

  • Start fermentation at the correct temperature - mix the water to correct temperature then add the sugar and yeast
  • If using a heater belt or pad, do not switch it on until the following day, as the majority of heat is generated in the first 24-36 hours
  • Do not use a heater pad for Turbo Express.

Turbo Classic - (Former Turbo Yeast)

  • Excellent all-rounder
  • Use 8kg of sugar
  • High quality distillate
  • Handles up to 33 degrees C ambient air temperature
  • Turbo of choice unless speed, yield, purity required or air temp is over 33 degrees C

Triple Distilled Turbo

  • Has a new strain of yeast that produces less and absorbs more by-products, making the distillate much cleaner.
  • Has a slow fermentation - 7 days
  • Only use with cool air temperatures - 18-24 degrees C
  • Use when ultimate quality is desired
  • Will turn fermenter black (When used with Turbo Carbon) - Use Brewshield or Neon Pink to clean

Turbo Power 23

  • Produces 23% ABV
  • Uses 10.4kg dextrose
  • Should increase yield by nearly 1/3
  • Only use with cool air temperatures - 18-24 degrees C
  • Use for greater quantity, BUT quality will be reduced
  • Will turn fermenter black (When used with Turbo Carbon)- Use Brewshield or Neon Pink to clean

Turbo Express - (Former Turbo Express)

  • A "24hr" yeast, if smaller amounts of sugar/dextrose are used
  • Make sure starting temperature is 40 degrees C
  • Do not use a heater pad.
  • Use when speed is essential, with 6kg of sugar for express brewing

Turbo Heat Wave - (Former Temperature Tolerant)

  • Use when air temperature is greater than 33 degrees C
  • Best used in the 25-40 degrees C temperature range
  • Best yeast for stacking - multiple brews, up to 200ltr with 8 sachets (providing start and air temperatures are both 20 degrees C)

Turbo Clear - (Improved)

Should be used for three reasons:

  1. To remove yeast - billions of yeast cells in your wash will break open during distilling, releasing off-flavour and aromas into the distillation, reducing distillation quality
  2. To remove "semi-soluble" compounds - will remove unwanted compounds that even filtration will not remove.
  3. To remove absorbents - The Turbo Yeasts when used in conjunction with Turbo Carbon, contain absorbents such as activated carbons and clays which trap metabolites (non-ethanol compounds produced by the yeasts). These will be released during boiling unless removed beforehand.

Turbo Carbons

Turbo Carbon is a fine powdered carbon which you add to your fermentor during fermentation time. It may be used with any of the Turbo yeasts for superior performance but is highly recommended when you use Power 23 and Triple Distilled.

Turbo Carbon also includes additional materials to absorb unwanted yeast by-products and aid the clumping together of suspended material in the fermentor.

Turbo Clear MUST be used when you use Turbo Carbon as you need to be sure to clear out all the absorbents prior to transfer to the boiler. If Turbo Clear is not used, then all the good work of the Turbo Carbon will be un-done as the absorbents will simply release all their stored impurities once the temperature starts to rise.
